EDUCATORS

Durango Forest School is owned by a team of two incredibly dedicated and passionate women. We are deeply connected and invested in our community and every aspect of our business that tendrils outward. As the directors, administrators, and educators of our school, we manage all program development, parent communication, registration, and finances. Durango Forest School is intentionally kept small so that we may provide the highest quality forest education for our students, and robust communication and support for our families. We provide regular opportunities for our families to connect with our school community, as well as bi-annual gatherings to celebrate our students. Jenny has been taking youth outdoors since 2009 and Sarah has been teaching since 2013 for a combined total of 26 years of experience working with children. It is an honor and a pleasure to hold this space in the Durango community, providing what we believe to be the most authentic and appropriate early childhood education possible.

JENNY KAPKE

Co-Director and Teacher

Jenny Kapke is an elementary education teacher with a Master's in Educational Psychology and a profound passion for connecting others with wild spaces outdoors and within themselves. For over a decade Jenny has worked in progressive education in Denver, most recently in a multi-age classroom of 2nd and 3rd graders at the Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning. She took her 25 students on field work regularly and multiple over-night trips a year including rafting, climbing and snow shoeing. After the birth of her son, Conrad in 2016, her family moved from Denver to Durango where she connected with the local forest school community and began spending multiple days a week in the wilderness with her son. The growth, confidence and connection she has seen in Conrad during this time has inspired her to create and grow nature-based, self-directed education opportunities for members of the Durango community. She has recently earned a Nature Based Teaching Certification from ERAFAN's and is First Aid and CPR certified. Prior to becoming a teacher and mother Jenny was a wilderness adventure guide with Bold Earth expeditions leading middle school and high schoolers on wilderness adventures in Utah, Colorado, California, Hawaii and Australia. She also completed a NOLS semester in the Sonoran Desert where she spent three months climbing, backpacking and sea kayaking. In her free time she can be found floating rivers with her family, biking local trails, traipsing around the desert and learning about local birds and wild edibles.

SARAH LEMCKE

Co-Director and Teacher

Sarah Lemcke is an early childhood educator, advocate for children, and passionate champion for progressive education. She has a current Professional Teacher's License for Early Childhood Education in the state of Colorado. After graduating from Columbia College Chicago in 2017 with her Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education with a focus on the Reggio Emilia Approach, she moved to Durango to enjoy a small town with public transportation, a vibrant community, and the mountains. She worked at Riverview Elementary as a preschool teacher for her first two years in Durango, and then at Needham Elementary for another two years. During her time at Needham, she opened the first public and inclusive forest-preschool program in Colorado (which was closed due to covid).  Sarah completed a semester-long internship at a forest preschool in Switzerland where she learned about the European Forest School philosophy. Having always been passionate and fascinated by alternative forms of education, Sarah has worked, volunteered, and interned in a variety of early childhood settings, including Montessori, Reggio Emilia, Forest Education, and progressive public arts education.  When she is not playing in the forest with her students, Sarah enjoys reading, mountain biking, writing, and spending time with her loved ones.
